Seattle, WA

Size: 205,000 SF

Sustainability: The project met Washington Sustainable Schools Protocol (WSSP). Features included ground-source heat pumps system with 45, 300-foot deep wells; radiant floor heating; skylights; and fan-assisted natural ventilation.

Phase 1B Commissioning

Wood Harbinger provided commissioning services for Nathan Hale High School’s modernization and expansion project. Approximately 75% of the school was renovated with major improvements focusing on the academic core, including new facilities for the KNHC C89.5 FM radio station, studio, and radio/TV classroom. This project provided a new 14,000 SF addition housing the library, visual arts classrooms, weight room, and lobby.

Mechanical systems commissioned included ground-source heat pumps, hydronic radiant floor systems, air heat recovery air handling units, general and kiln exhaust fans, domestic hot water system, split system air conditioners, and relief hoods. Electrical systems commissioned included emergency power, data wiring, cable television, lighting control, audio visual equipment, access control, security system intrusion alarm, and security closed circuit video. The new equipment is controlled by a Direct Digital Control (DDC) Energy Management and Control System (EMCS) that was integrated into the district’s network.

Phase 2 Commissioning

The Nathan Hale High School Modernization Phase 2 project renovated 191,203 SF of core instructional classrooms, administration space, the gymnasium, science classrooms, commons, the Black Box Theater, music rooms, and a kitchen. Careful design considerations were taken to respect the character of the buildings, which opened in 1963. Wood Harbinger delivered continuous analysis of trend data to troubleshoot HVAC equipment and sequences of operation post occupancy. The commissioning team provided the owner with documentation of potential concerns and issues and developed a resolution from design through construction and into occupancy.

Mechanical systems commissioned included constant and variable volume air handlers, variable volume air terminal units, condensing boilers hydronic pumps and plate frame heat exchanger, natural ventilation cabinets, domestic water heaters, gas fired instant domestic water heaters, exhaust fans, and electric baseboard and cabinet heaters. Electrical systems commissioned included lighting control and power monitoring.

Through Wood Harbinger’s commissioning services, Nathan Hale High School achieved three credits from Washington Sustainable Schools Protocol (WSSP).
