Mechanical Team Leader

Are you an experienced Mechanical Engineer looking for a leadership opportunity with a talented team? Wood Harbinger is winning work and looking for a Mechanical Team Leader with deep healthcare design experience and relationships in the A/E industry to lead a mechanical team primarily in, but not limited to, our healthcare practice. This is a client-facing, leadership role that will contribute to business development and marketing, oversee project delivery and quality control, forecast workload, be accountable for financial performance, and collaborate with other team disciplines.

Here’s what you’ll be doing:

  • Successfully lead and manage single and multi-discipline project teams to scope, schedule and budget.
  • Manage scope creep and scope seep.
  • Review and approve timesheets on a weekly basis.
  • Act as lead mechanical designer on projects.
  • Attend client and project meetings.
  • Assist the firm in marketing new clients, as well as getting new work and repeat business from existing clients.
  • Participate in client interviews to secure new work.
  • Target billable is 70% – 80%, with remainder geared toward marketing, proposals, and team administrative management.
  • Act as a QC reviewer for work of other engineers and designers.
  • Oversee risk management of the mechanical work.
  • Stamp and sign project deliverables.
  • Successfully manage and interface with clients to understand client and user needs and articulate those needs into a coordinated design that meets owners’ project needs.
  • Mentor and teach junior staff.
  • Plan and manage staff and staff workload.
  • Hold yourself and others accountable for desired results.
  • Develop and negotiate project fees with clients.
  • Obtain and review project contracts for work and for subconsultants.
  • Maintain the firm’s mechanical technical standards and standard specifications.
  • Author technical articles, blogs for social media marketing, and attend/speak at local and national healthcare conferences
  • Travel for project-related work (typically local travel)

Here’s what we’re looking for:

  • 10+ years of client consulting experience and design background in healthcare facilities. Other market experience is a plus.
  • Active Washington State professional engineering license.
  • Bachelor’s Degree in mechanical engineering or related field.
  • Ability to develop a bond of trust with clients and staff, while holding others accountable.
  • Expertise in the design and management of HVAC, plumbing, piping, medical gas, energy plant, fire protection on projects, and leading a team of designers.
  • Exceptional client communication and client management skills that is demonstrated by the ability to gain a track record of repeat business.
  • Exceptional mentoring skills as demonstrated by growth of skills of individuals under your management.
  • Experience in project management and project accounting skills as demonstrated by the ability to create successful financial outcomes on projects.
  • Experience with a variety of project delivery methods including design-bid-build, design/build, and progressive design build.
  • Working knowledge of AutoCAD, BIM, and Revit MEP.
  • LEED AP credentials a plus.
  • Strong working knowledge of Microsoft Office Word, Excel, PowerPoint.
  • Working knowledge of applicable codes, including but not limited to:
    • Healthcare: NFPA 99-2018, ASHRAE 170, and the 2018 FGI Guidelines.

Other: International Building Code (IBC), ASHRAE standards, Uniform Plumbing Code (UPC), Uniform Fire Code (UFC), Washington State Energy Code (WSEC) and other applicable codes required for building mechanical design.


Senior Mechanical Engineer

Here’s what we’re looking for:

  • Bachelors’ degree in Mechanical Engineering or related discipline
  • Minimum 8 years’ experience in the building design or construction industry
  • Active professional engineer registration in the State of Washington
  • Working knowledge of HVAC, plumbing, piping, fire protection, building automation controls, sustainable design, and all aspects of mechanical design for the built environment
  • Experience successfully delivering mechanical and multi-discipline projects to Architects and Owners in diverse markets, including healthcare, military, commercial, higher education, life sciences, civic, and government
  • Well-developed and demonstrated project management and people management skills, including managing budgets, mentoring staff, holding others accountable for deliverables, interacting with diverse personalities, and influencing others
  • Track record of successful business development and marketing efforts
  • Proficiency with AutoCAD, AutoCAD MEP and Revit MEP
  • Proficiency with MS suite (Word, Excel, Project Outlook)
  • LEED AP Certification is preferred
