NCBC 2014 was a Huge Success!

Held May 19th through 21st at the Connecticut Convention Center in Hartford, the National Conference on Building Commissioning (NCBC) is the Building Commissioning Association’s (BCA) annual gathering of commissioning providers, engineers, building owners/operators, construction and controls contractors, and a smattering of other A/E/C industry players from around the country. As active BCA leaders and members, Wood Harbinger puts NCBC at the top of our list for attendance and participation. With a variety of well-delivered presentations and some fun events, this year has really demonstrated why NCBC is the premier commissioning conference in the nation (maybe even the world?).

Wood Harbinger’s Commissioning A-Team! Bruce Pitts and Jeff Yirak.

I arrived in Hartford Monday afternoon in time for the BCA Annual Meeting and Dinner. Bruce flew in earlier to attend the BCA Scholarship Foundation golf tournament that morning; he’s a Founding Board Member of the BCA Scholarship Foundation, so it’s about more than just the golf for him. This year we were first on the presentation agenda, partnering with Rick Vance of Viridian USA for Specifications and Specifics: Maximizing Value in Design-Phase Commissioning. Check out my blog post last week for a brief description.

I was a little nervous before our presentation on Tuesday morning, but I presented last year, and co-authored the presentations for the year before that, so I’m getting less nervous every time. And I’m happy to report that our presentation went great! We had a fair turnout, and I really enjoyed getting my speaking bit over right away so I could relax and enjoy the other great presentations at this year’s NCBC. I got to connect with some comrades from McKinstry and I learned something from the perspectives of other commissioning providers from around the country. I even learned a new word: “negawatts” – the watts you didn’t use, thanks to your building’s energy efficiency.

On the second day of presentations, Bruce and I tag-teamed sessions so we could cover more ground. I particularly enjoyed the Portfolio Cx Programs from University of VA session and I got some new ideas from the Optimizing the Building Management System to Aid in Cx and Sustain Energy Efficiency talk.

I had to bug out after lunch to catch my (long) flight home, but Bruce was able to stay for the Town Hall – Closing Plenary session. We’re both looking forward to NCBC15 next year in St. Louis!
