BCxA “The Checklist”: President Bruce Pitts: On Value

The Building Commissioning Association (BCxA) recently announced its 2016 leadership. Wood Harbinger’s own Bruce Pitts, CPMP, CSBA, LEED AP, was elected President of the International Board of Directors. Congratulations Bruce! His first “Letter from the President,” was published February 24, 2016 in BCA’s The Checklist e-newsletter, part of their new blog. Read the full letter below or on the BCA’s website here.

Dear BCxA Members and Commissioning Stakeholders,

I’ve been involved in building commissioning since long before it had a name of its own. I like to say I didn’t choose commissioning as a career path – it chose me because, like you, I cared deeply about the quality of my projects, solving problems, and working with a team of professionals with shared values.

When I joined the BCxA sixteen years ago, after attending NCBC 1999, I discovered a bond with men and women whose high ideals and the association’s Essential Attributes matched my own. The value of the BCxA became real, and personal.

Over the years, as BCxA membership has grown, we’ve taken on many challenges as an association to improve the value that commissioning brings to providers and other stakeholders in the building community. As a result, we could be considered a group of affiliated competitors with a common purpose: advocacy for members and all who participate in designing, building and operating facilities for best performance.

That’s the “forever value” of the BCxA. We are also reminded that the future is always before us. Technology and the Internet of Things are changing our world at a rapid pace. The value we bring to the building industry must continue to change as well. I welcome your thoughts, suggestions and actions you would like to help us take in order to meet the coming decade with confidence.

Here are some of the action items we’re already taking for you in 2016:

  • Formally launching BCxA University as a robust resource that serves commissioning providers and the building community, from newcomers to seasoned professionals.
  • Delivering curricula that help you master technical challenges, and exceed the new DOE requirements for commissioning providers, with our same high standards.
  • Improving communication with you and connecting through our blog on important issues, technical matters, standards and policy-making that affect your role as commissioning providers.

We have completed our work with the Building Commissioning Certification Board’s submittal for ANSI/ISO 17024 accreditation to certify commissioning providers with the industry-recognized and respected designation of Certified Commissioning Professional (CCP).

Remember that NCBC 2016 takes place at the Renaissance Indian Wells Resort and Spa (May 16-18). The theme this year, “Fire and Ice” will illuminate some of the most significant resource and efficiency challenges faced by the building community today. The agenda and registration are now available online.

I’m excited about NCBC 2016! Come join us and meet some of best and brightest commissioning people in the world – you’ll see for yourself.
