WSP, VIA, Wood Harbinger Win Silver at 2018 ACEC Engineering Excellence Awards

WSP, VIA Architecture, and Wood Harbinger are honored to have received a Best in State Silver Award for “Complexity” from the American Council of Engineering Companies (ACEC) for our work on the  Tacoma Amtrak Cascades Station.  Wood Harbinger provided mechanical and electrical engineering for the project. The 51st Annual ACEC Washington Engineering Excellence Awards ceremony was held on Friday evening, January 19th.

Best in State Silver Award – Complexity: Tacoma Amtrak Cascades Station, Washington State Department of Transportation; Tacoma, WA

The Tacoma community will celebrate the opening of WSDOT’s new Tacoma Amtrak Cascades Station in December, a vital multimodal hub that will support regional mobility and also anchor new development and revitalization in the Tacoma Dome District. The project team, led by WSP, integrated a modern 9,875-square-foot station seamlessly into a portion of the historic Freighthouse Square Building. Both upgrading the existing rail platform and building a second to accommodate both expanded services for Amtrak Cascades and Coast Starlight trains and existing Sound Transit Sounder commuter rail trains were completed. The new station also provides better connection to other regional public transit systems,
with stations for Sound Transit Link light rail and Pierce Transit buses nearby.

Greatest Challenges

MERGING new station infrastructure and systems into 100 years’ worth of existing infrastructure and systems within extremely constrained physical space.

RECONCILING AND BALANCING the goals, standards and requirements of WSDOT, Amtrak, Sound Transit and the City of Tacoma.

ENGAGING in a stakeholder process with the community to maintain historical integrity and visual aesthetic of one of Tacoma’s landmark
buildings

COMPLETING design on compressed schedule to meet strict federal funding grant requirements and deadlines

DEMOLISHING and constructing the new facilities without affecting existing daily rail operations

Best of the Best

32 projects were honored at this year’s ACEC Engineering Excellence Awards ceremony. We congratulate our peers for their innovative and inspiring engineering work!
