The twin-bay 747 hangar at the Detroit Metropolitan Airport accommodates flight-line
aircraft maintenance.
A low-level deluge Aqueous Film Forming Foam (AFFF) water sprinkler system is provided in
the hangar bays, in accordance with National Fire Protection Association (NFPA) standard
NFPA-409. The system includes closed head overhead sprinklers, an in-grate floor nozzle
system, and a firewater deluge underground detention tank. Discharge from the detention
tank flows through a metering valve station and then is passed via an oil/water separator
to the storm sewer system.
The fire alarm system consists of manual pull stations at egress locations, combination
audio/visual evacuation alarms (flashing lights and horns), flow switches in each
sprinkler riser valve, smoke detectors, duct smoke detectors, control panels, and
graphic annunciator panels.
