Central Washington University wanted to increase their chilled water system capacity without adding
space to the existing plant building. Wood Harbinger performed a feasibility study and provided the
design for a 1.2 million gallon thermal energy storage system having a capacity of 6,700 ton-hours
of chilled water. The system included a 60-foot diameter by 56-foot high tank, chilled water piping,
pumps, and controls. The thermal energy storage tank was located on vacant land behind the plant and
connected to the chilled water system to augment peak cooling capacity.
Benefits include reduced energy costs and greater operating flexibility. An off-the-shelf tank
was selected from among pre-qualified vendors to ensure that Central Washington University received a proven
system at a competitive price. Only a single 3,000 gpm circulating pump is used to charge and discharge the tank.
