Wood Harbinger was called upon by Seattle Public Schools to investigate conditions of a non-functioning
boiler and trim at the Orca-Columbia School. The investigation developed a report that subsequently
led to a full design for a new 60 bhp, dual-fuel boiler, controls, and accessories.
The key to the success of this project was inserting the new boiler in an existing basement
boiler room with limited space. Selection of cast-iron sectional boiler components aided in this
installation. The design also incorporated the following features:
-
Provided a new steam header and reconnected branch steam lines;
-
Provided a new boiler vent stack with draft damper connected to existing breeching;
-
Removed two gas domestic water heaters and vents and provided a single gas fired domestic water heater;
-
Abandoned Boiler #2 and disconnected existing systems including vent stack and repair openings on boiler and main breeching; and
-
Connected new boiler feedwater piping, natural gas and fuel oil piping, makeup water, steam pressure relief valves, electrical power, and control wiring to new boiler.
