P-350 Industrial Wastewater Pretreatment Facility
wins 2008 ACEC Washington State Chapter Gold Award. Wood Harbinger received the American Council of Engineering
Companies (ACEC) State Chapter’s 2008 Engineering Excellence Gold Award. Wood Harbinger was recognized for overall project management, mechanical,
electrical, process, and fire protection design for the Industrial Wastewater Pretreatment Facility (IWPF) located at Naval
Base Kitsap - Bremerton, WA.
Wood Harbinger’s innovative design combined and integrated several state-of-the-art treatment systems to treat
toxic wastewaters, treatments include: ion exchange, chemical precipitation, and ceramic crossflow microfiltration.
Hexavalent chromium, cyanide, heavy metal, oily wastewater, and chelated and acid/alkaline cleaning wastewaters
are representative of the wastewaters that are treated at the IWPF. This facility provides flexibility in operation
and configuration, and enables the plant operators to concurrently treat multiple wastewater streams in a constrained
space, two-thirds the space of the previous facility.
Wood Harbinger led a Functional Analysis Concept Development study to evaluate alternative wastewater
treatments, assess risk, and compare costs to select the ideal combination of treatment technologies.
It is this innovative combination of treatment technologies located in a constrained space that made this project
exceptionally valuable to the Navy. The on-site treatment of multiple types of industrial wastewater eliminated
the need to transport these contaminated materials off the base, creating a more efficient and cost effective process.
