Central Terminal Expansion, Sea-Tac International Airport, SeaTac, WA

The Central Terminal Expansion project created a grand central space, a recognizable orientation point at the center of the airport’s main terminal. A new 70-foot high atrium on the west side of the terminal provides airline passengers with panoramic views of the airfield and vistas of the Olympic Mountains and Mount Rainier.

The project includes a new dining and retail area called Pacific Marketplace. With twenty-two stores, seven cafes, and one restaurant, it doubled the airport’s retail and seating space. A 52,000 SF Maintenance and Distribution Center is provided in the basement.

Security checkpoints at the entries to the A/B and C/D Concourses were relocated to provide post-security access to all terminal concourses. The former ramp level operations and ground loaded commuter aircraft parking positions were reconfigured to provide 21 aircraft parking positions.

Wood Harbinger provided mechanical engineering services for the Central Terminal Expansion project. The HVAC system is a variable air volume system consisting of a built-up air-handling units utilizing parallel fan powered, variable volume and constant volume terminal units. Cooling is provided by connection to the central plant chilled water system. Heating is provided utilizing the central plant steam system to provide a hydronic heating water system through the use of steam to water converters.
