Steam Distribution System Upgrades, Washington State University, Pullman, WA
Wood Harbinger provided the preliminary and detailed design of steam distribution and condensate return system upgrades for Washington State University. Our services also included construction administration.
Upgrades were required to support the operation of the new Energy Plant located on Grimes Way.
Project Tasks:
Task 1: Existing Power Plant Retrofit
- Converted existing storage vessel as a campus condensate receiver and added condensate transfer pumps to allow automatic transfer of steam condensate to the new Energy Plant;
- Completed the piping systems in the new boiler wing to include connecting steam and condensate supplies to deaerators and feedwater piping between feedwater pumps and boilers;
- Upgraded the power plant substation and switchgear;
- Performed electrical load metering; and
- Coordinated asbestos abatement by WSU.
Task 2: Steam Tunnel Upgrades
- Completed Steam Distribution Survey and Report;
- Upgraded approximately 950 lineal feet of the Grimes Way tunnel;
- Designed a new vault with access at the intersection of the Grimes Way and Quad-Services Road tunnels;
- Designed a new tunnel section to interconnect the existing Grimes Way tunnel with the new Energy Plant;
- Provided temporary construction barriers for 4160 V medium-voltage system and communications cabling;
- Provided temporary Steam Service Design for Grimes Way tunnel; and
- Provided Phasing Plan to minimize disruption of campus activities.
